Trans Fat and MSG Public Enemy You Can’t truss it!

BE ADVISED, I DROPPED THE BALL ON THIS POST. I SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THE TIME TO DO MORE RESEARCH BEFORE I POSTED IT. NORMALLY I AM CAREFUL BUT JUST LIKE THE BIG NEWSPAPERS EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE YOU HAVE TO PRINT A RETRACTION. Remember the big deal with trans fats a few years ago? Now you see all the food packaging has written on it ; “No Trans Fat” or “Zero Trans Fat”.

You would figure that the consumer won that battle. People became alarmed to learn that they were feeding their kids these dangerous trans fats that will clog hearts and kill everyone. They wrote letters and made phone calls begging and pleading for the food processors to stop adding this bad stuff into their favorite “foods”. The consumer spoke and the consumer won! Or maybe not?

How about MSG? Before the trans fat scare there was the MSG scare. When the consumer learned that this chemical flavor enhancer was added to their food they went ape shit. Before long the food packaging all started showing up with the words “No MSG” on it. Chinese resteraunts even proudly placed “No MSG” on their store fronts and menus. The panic died down and everyone went back to eating their favorite tasty “foods”.

Later if anyone even mentioned MSG many people would say that it’s illegal to use it now so no worries…….I have no idea where that came from??

In both cases the food processors were faced with a conundrum. How do we get people back to eating our “food”? Can we take the trans fat out?? Can we take the MSG out??

The answer to both questions is YES but that would mean that the food would not taste the same and it may require a change of their recipes. From a money-making standpoint this is not good for them. It would be too hard and costly and the possibility of losing customers too great.

Like everything else in this wild wild west world that is hidden behind a guise of order and control (made up for your protection & compliance) it is much easier to just change a law,regulation,guideline,rule and/or any compliance or precedent.

Basically the processed food industry and chemical manufacturing industry cried louder than the unwary consumers in both cases. What we got was a simple brush off by the authority that makes you think that they are there for your safety but are actually there to protect and promote business. This authority is called the FDA and they have us duped every time we see the FDA stamp of approval. Again, they exist to carefully keep citizens safe from unscrupulous companies who produce the foods and drugs we consume and at the same time keep business moving forward. So they essentially serve two masters.

Because of this the FDA simply changed a few things. In the case of trans fats, all they did was change the minimum amount of trans fats that have to be reported. In other words, if a cookie company has .5 grams of trans fat per serving that once meant you had to report that the cookies had trans fat. Period. But with the new guideline the FDA made the amount “allowed” higher. So now the cookie company can say they have no trans fats. Slick huh?

With MSG all they did was change the name to a myriad of different names. The official story from the FDA is that MSG might cause negative reactions, including headaches and nausea… But they can’t “conclusively” link these side effects to MSG. So if it’s a big maybe then they will still allow it? So if there is a chance of harm that doesn’t count? Wow, thanks for lookin out!

So now if you see citric acid as an ingredient you think “okay, that’s fine”. But, guess what? That is MSG. Some other known offenders include whey protein, soy protein, any form of hydrolyzed protein, soy sauce, gelatin, and anything fermented. These are ingredients that always contain MSG.

Now if your into weight training and physical exercise you may like to enjoy a few whey protein shakes everyday like me. So how does it feel that you have been duped ? If it said “contains MSG” on the package would you buy it? Hell no.

So once again you have to think for yourself. You can’t depend on a regulatory body that is awash with big money to protect you and you can’t expect food processors (some who reside outside the USA) to do the right thing either. That is a made up fictitious world that is created to make you “feel” safe so that you will keep happily spending your money on their product.

My advice is to stay away from processed foods and do research on your protein powders.

Like the great poet of our time Mr. Flavor Flav once said “can’t truss it”

  1. Learning a lot with your articles. I wonder if organic market is duping us as well. It is really becoming about choosing a lesser evil.

    • Good question…. A lot of organic companies are now owned by the big food processors. Old business idea, if you can’t beat your competition , buy em. Then run it how you like.

  2. Interesting thought man. Besides homegrown our options are declining without its junk. Suggestions on an article about how to go around it would be beneficial for all of us. Keep up the good work and living hardcore.
